What Does It Mean to Be Presbyterian?
The word "Presbyterian" comes from the Greek word, presbuteroswhich means elders. It refers to our unique system of church governance, which relies on representatives elected by and from the congregation as a whole.
All That is Required to be a Presbyterian
Confess -- that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Saviour
Trust -- in Christ; there is forgiveness of sins
Promise -- to follow Christ and Christ's example of living
Commit -- oneself to attend church and to become involved in her work
What Do Presbyterians Believe?
- We believe in one True God, our Creator and Heavenly Father who, through his Only Son, Jesus Christ, lived among us on Earth, died on the Cross, and arose from the dead three days later, to live on as the Holy Spirit, a constant presence in our lives.
- We believe that our Heavenly Father loves all of us unconditionally and that it is through His Grace that we are saved from sin. We believe that the Bible, rooted in the Old Testament, is the foundation of our Christian faith. We value prayer, education, and service to others and strive to live our lives according to the principles that Jesus teaches in the New Testament.
- We celebrate two sacraments: Baptism and Communion. Baptism is performed for children where one or both parents are members and for adults seeking to profess their faith for the first time. The entire congregation participates in this service as a symbol of our commitment to each other as members of God's family and as a commitment to the new member of the Body of Christ.
- Communion is celebrated on the last Sunday of each month at Providence. The bread represents Christ's broken body, the grape juice represents Christ's bloodshed for the forgiveness of our sins, and the service celebrates the Risen Lord until He comes again. Anyone who confesses a faith in Jesus Christ and seeks forgiveness is invited to receive communion.
Providence was chartered as a member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) by Cherokee Presytery in September, 2003.
